From the Finnish Music Industry to Mac users: “Buy a cd player.”

“Now, we need to understand that listening to music on your computer is an extra priviledge. Normally people listen to music on their car or through their home stereos”, says Kyyrä and continues; “If you are a Linux or Mac user, you should consider purchasing a regular CD player.”

Hidden Gems

I was working on a script to test our DNS servers here at work today and I discovered that there was a perl script in my scripts directory called “dispus”.

“WTF is that?” I wondered as I opened it up.

It turns out to be a very nice disc space usage script that I apparently pulled from this UnixReview article a long time ago and forgot about.

It’s pretty nice. It has a command line interface and you can CD around the disc and see the space usage.

Highly recommended.

Cracking RFID

Wow.

“The Texas Instruments DST tag is a cryptographically enabled RFID transponder used in several wide-scale systems including vehicle immobilizers and the ExxonMobil SpeedPass system. This page serves as an overview of our successful attacks on DST enabled systems.”

“The encryption algorithm used in the TI DST tags is an unpublished, proprietary cipher that uses a 40-bit key. The algorithm was designed in the early 1990’s by engineers at Texas Intruments, but is still being deploying in current systems. By today’s standards, a 40-bit key is unacceptably short: advances in computing power have made such keys succeptable to brute-force key guessing attacks. Therefore, the actual security of the DST system rests with the secrecy of the proprietary algorithm used in the tags. One of the most important principles in cryptographic design states, however, that the security of a system should be based only on the secrecy of the keys, never on the secrecy of the algorithm.”

There are videos of these guys hotwiring a car and stealing gas from a pump.

Very nicely done.

Oh, and as always, thanks to Boing Boing.

Big Old Storm

We had a big storm in the Twin Cities area last night. They were reporting 70 MPH straight line winds in the Northern suburbs. A couple of my co-workers lost power and had trees down.

We were watching the storm on the channel 4 radar and it pretty much stayed North of I-94. We live South of I-94 by about a mile and all we got was some wind and a bit of rain.

But the best part was when the worst part of the storm reached Shoreview, where most of the local TV station towers are, and then channels 4 and 2 went off the air.

Oops.

And for some reason, my Cisco 678 DSL router died. It looks like it’s trying to train up and never does – just like the last one died. Maybe I need a surge supressor on the phone line? Anyway, I plugged in my (crappy) ActionTec and we are on line again.

Vaughn Bode’s Artwork

Warning – Links Contain Adult Content

Wow. When was the last time I saw a Vaughn Bode drawing?

Cheech Wizard was the best.

Apparently the NYC Graffiti Artists really really love to do Bode drawings. There is a huge gallery here.

There is much more stuff here too – this is a site run by his son, who also does much the same style of artwork.

And then there is Nigel Hendrickson, who has done a short computer animation based on Cheech Wizard. Very nicely done.
