The Mighty GPz305!

I ‘unstored’ the 305 last night and cleaned the carbs out. There was a nice ring of varnish on the needles right where they sit in the jets at idle.

Maybe that’s why it wasn’t idling so good?

Anyway, I put it back together and turned on the petcock. Then I went into the basement to look for my motorcycle jumper cables. I bet you can guess what I found when I got back to the garage…

Yup, a nice spreading pool of gas on the floor.

Shit!

It would appear that there was some grit in one of the gas inlet seats that was holding the needle open. Cleaned that up and all was good.

The battery (which I removed two years ago – I didn’t ride it at all last year) was really low on water, so I had to walk up to the store and buy some distilled water.

Took care of that, made an extension for the positive battery post out of some 12ga wire (as I couldn’t find my motorcycle jumper cables and the car ones wouldn’t fit down onto the post) hooked it up to the car battery and it fired right up!

F’n Jap bike!

It’s still not running so good. Needs the choke on most of the time, but I think that may be because the stock airbox is gone and the K&N filters flow better. So I’ll probably have to lean it out a bit.

I’m sure it’s going to need a new battery and I don’t think I’ve ever changed the oil since I bought it (5 years ago? My my.) So I probably better take care of that.

Anyway, it’s running well enough to help me cheat my ass off in Gus’ rally!
